Nursery School &

Baby Unit

The Nursery School and Baby Unit are housed in self- contained buildings within the beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds of the main school. Teaching methods and curricula are designed to maximise each child’s potential and carefully crafted educational programmes flow from a grounding in the Nursery School, through the preparatory departments of Heathland School, culminating with an easy transition into The Senior department in due course.

The Baby Unit caters for children up to the age of two years, with the very smallest of our children having their very own Baby Room where they are cared for until they are walking confidently and are ready to move through into the Toddler Room. Staff in the Toddler Room introduce the children to craft work and sand and water play, with access to their very own conservatory area where the children have their snacks and meals.

Moving from the Toddlers into Top Nursery and then Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2, the Nursery School provides the continuation of facilities and activities most appropriate for the development of children up to school entry level. Many of our children move into our reception class in main school without the worry or upset of changing schools or routine.

Facilities:

A visit is essential, but briefly, we offer a combination of pleasant classrooms, together with areas designed around the Early Years Curriculum for educational play. All equipment is of the highest standard and much heed has been taken of educational psychology in the selection and siting of toys and equipment. Outside, we have hard play and grassed areas set within our extensive five acre site, where every opportunity is taken for energetic outside play.

Heathland Nursery follows the Smiling for Life policy, serving healthy snacks and nutritious, well-balanced school meals during term time, which the children eat in their room groups. Alternatively, the children may bring in their own packed lunches.

Nursery hours are between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.

Nursery School Philosophy:

The introduction of your child to Heathland Nursery School is carefully planned and monitored to ensure positive and confident attitudes to Nursery life.

Play activities are designed to develop and encourage individual talents and maximise personal potential, as well as learning to play alongside others. This is achieved in a caring and secure family environment supported by enthusiastic, well qualified staff.

We seek to develop cognitive, memory, language and social skills. Each child’s progress is monitored and noted and parents are regularly updated with feedback from staff and pupil profiles. Imagination stimulus is ever present on the walls in the form of pictures, letters, words and numbers. Topic work involves such themes as the seasons, road safety and families. Parents receive termly newsletters informing them of the topics and themes of the term and individual events are publicised in letters to parents as needed. We take the children out on trips when appropriate and we welcome visitors, such as the police, fire service etc. into Nursery to talk to the children about how they help us.

Children of all faiths are welcome to the Nursery and we offer a choice of regular, halal or vegetarian school meals.
